Never-ending List of Favorite Stage Performances - Benjamin Walker as “Andrew Jackson” in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
The first time I saw Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (yes, there were multiple times), I knew nothing about it. In fact, after the first number, someone behind us yelled, “What the hell is this?!” and started laughing. I find this to be an appropriate assessment of the wonderful and zany show done by an incredible, hilarious ensemble. At the center of said ensemble, leading the way, was Benjamin Walker, someone I wasn’t entirely familiar with, except for the whispers I had heard about his performance in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. I know Andrew Jackson isn’t exactly the most sympathetic historical figure that someone could play, but Walker’s performance was exuberant, reckless, engaging, and wild. While on the one hand he played a clear parody of powerful figures and emo-rock musical stars, on the other hand, his characterization was deeper and more profound than many performances I have seen in straight drama. He was hilarious and moving from start to finish. And who else could make tight leather pants, knee pads, and raccoon eyeliner look so good?
SECONDED SO HARD.
